Developing the Game for Girls and Women

The Birmingham County Football Development Scheme, Girls and Women's section, is continuing to grow rapidly. Women's football is the number one sport in the country for females, with more than 60,000 registered players. This number is still growing and with all the support that the Football Association give to promoting the sport the numbers will continue to grow for many years to come.

Within the Development Scheme our aim is to offer girls of all ages and abilities the chance to play football within their local area. We are actively involved in school programmes across the city, working closely within the community to promote club links and give girls the opportunities to further their footballing career within FA Coaching Centres and Centres of Exellence.

Clubs...

To find a club near you, contact the Development Officer responsible for your area (see contacts - left)

Schools...

We deliver Curriculum and After School Sessions to all schools in the Birmingham area and are currently promoting our scheme in the Black Country, with the aim being to offer Girls Football coaching in as many schools as possible. If your school would like to take up this opportunity, please contact the Development Officer responsible for your area.

School League... North and South Birmingham Schools can now participate in what was the country's first ever Girls Schools League, co-ordinated by Birmingham County's Football Development Scheme. The league offers the chance to build on in-school coaching sessions and caters for school years 7 & 8 and 9 & 10. The competition has proved extremely popular since kicking off in 2001 - contact Heather Cowan if your school would like to take part.

Coaching Centres...
We operate a number of Coaching Centres throughout the region as part of our work with the Active Sports initiative. This is an opportunity for girls who already play for clubs to receive extra, quality coaching to enhance their playing potential.
Trials are held at the start of each season, so contact the relevant Development Officer in your area for more details.
Centres of Excellence...
This is the pinnacle of girls football in the county, and the next step up from Coaching Centres for girls who show particular excellence and the potential to make waves within the women's game! Four Centres currently operate in our area at: Coventry City, Birmingham City, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Aston Villa.
Female Coaches
Birmingham was the first County to offer "women only" coach education, with the aim of bringing more females into the game as a whole - not just as players! Coaches often act as role models for youngsters, therefore can help encourage more girls to maintain their involvement and enjoyment of football. See our Coach Education page for more details on the qualifications you could gain whilst developing your personal skills and making a massive contribution to football development!

Mentor Scheme... based on the FA's National Mentor scheme, we offer female coaches the benefit of a mentor who will help develop newly gained skills and offer advice and support whilst encouraging more women coaches to climb up the qualification ladder.

If you would like to become a football coach, or a coach mentor, contact the Football Development Officer responsible for your area.
