Despite missing 9 squad members as a result of the 'flu bug, Birmingham showed how versatile they can be, taking a vital 3 points from their Midland Counties Youth Championship game against Staffordshire. As early as the 3rd minute, the Midlanders had a goalscoring opportunity thanks to a pinpoint cross from Chris Woodhall, but Ronnie Sayer's shot went narrowly wide, whilst a great flowing move saw the Hednesford Youngster's strike bounce off the visitors' post just minutes later. A narrow miss from Staffordshire's Craig Bailey kept the Birmingham defence on their toes, but the home side took the advantage in the twelfth minute thanks to Roy Dunkley's strike. .The Nuneaton Borough midfielder who was making his County debut almost made it two when his 21st minute shot was cleared off the line. Five minutes later, Matty Lewis struck the bar after a delicate lob looked as if it was heading for the net. .The Marconi striker was not to be denied after scoring in all 5 of his previous County appearances. His low header in the 32nd minute resulting from a tremendous tackle from Ronnie Sayer doubled the Birmingham lead. The excitement continued throughout the second half, with another contribution from Ronnie Sayer whose corner kick was converted by Captain Adam Cooper. The Birmingham foot came off the pedal for a while, which allowed Staffordshire to claw a goal back in the 51st minute, but fresh legs in the shape of Matty O'Rourke and Peter Carter helped sure the home team's defence. "Ronnie Sayer's performance was outstanding in every department," commented Team Spokesman Steve Poole. "But the players that came into the side today will certainly give Martin Sweeney some ideas for the squad that plays Surrey." |
