SUFFOLK’S INTER-COUNTIES WEEKEND

Bisley, 16 & 17th June

The annual Inter-Counties championship is one of the main highlights of county shooting — more than 30 teams from England, Wales, Ireland and Scotland competing over two days at Bisley. The sun always seem to shine on this competition but this year something went wrong with the planning — and a large Atlantic low pressure system was sitting over Bisley, resulting in drenching but fortunately warm rain on Saturday and cold but fortunately dry winds on Sunday.

A fine turn-out of a dozen Suffolk shooters made it down to Bisley, with the hardier souls braving the torrents to compete in the first and only individual match of the weekend, the 300 yard Jarvis. Others kept their powder dry for the SHORT RANGE match which was held first under clouds, then rain which, by 600 yards, had become so strong that shooting had to be stopped for 20 minutes as the targets became invisible behind the falling water.

The order of shooting was:

This was a disappointing result with the team easily capable of at least another ten points, especially as the wind had fallen to virtually zero by 600 yards. The worst of the damage was done at 300 yards with 23 points dropped, but 500 saw an exceptional recovery and just six points dropped.

We couldn’t sustain the standard though and another 14 points slipped through our fingers at 600 yards, leaving the team (for the second time this season) scoring a rather average 1157 and 21st place.

It was not all gloom though — the scores concealed two excellent shoots, by the two youngest members of the squad, Debs and Dani, and we had made the cut to shoot on Stickledown the next day.

The same team of shooters and coaches, and the same batting order, were used for the LONG RANGE match. The weather had fortunately turned dry, but a strong, cold breeze was blowing straight into our faces.

This score was again disappointing, although not marred with the mistakes of Saturday (the schadenfreuder factor this time being provided by Norfolk who recorded several misses in a row and finished with a point less than us).

David emerged as the top shot of what had been a very wet, occasionally frustrating but despite it all rather jolly weekend.
