This is a cover that I obtained in May 2000. Use of the V.R.I. overprinted O.F.S. stamps in 1936 is legal since they were valid until well into the 1940's, but 3s. is more than was necessary to pay the postage.
This shield is was created by the 'News of the World' newspaper, in Bloemfontein. It is a very close visual facsimile of the shield then used by the British occupation authorities to overprint O.F.S. postcards, but the words advertise the newspaper. Whether by accident or design, some cards were printed with this shield, and got into circulation. Ever since then, they have been the subject of much debate and controversy.
