The PETER TAVY PIPER The PETER TAVY PIPER is the Village magazine supported by the Parish Council and distributed free to all households in the Parish of Peter Tavy. It is published four times a year in February ,May, August & November. The Editors Steve and Alison Carreck have links in the village going back to the middle of the 18th century on the one hand and graphic design and public relations on the other. Such is its success that with ever widening contacts world wide with interests in Peter Tavy, its surrounding history, and people, past and present, an e-mail version has been compiled. If you would like to receive a copy simply mailto: roger.meyrick@dial.pipex.com providing your name, any special interest in Peter Tavy and whether you would be willing to write a short piece about your knowledge or memories of the village, the farms, your family or people you recall. The BOOK OF PETER TAVY and CUDLIPPTOWN A
Page of Amendments to ‘The Book of Peter Tavy with
Cudlipptown’ Since the Book was published in November 2002 a small number of amendments has been drawn to our attention. Some are clearly errors of fact, some really additional material not available at the time of publication. The Book was never intended as stated in the Introduction as an official history. It is rather a series of impressions of the parish as recalled by those who have lived here and discovered from old photos and records that were lent to us. Half a century is a long time to look back and not everyone remembers events in the same way. A full century allows of genuine misunderstandings in what is passed down in families, wherever possible what has been written has been checked against written records, but this was not always satisfactory, as on occasions when perhaps a newspaper article or photograph had the wrong date. To those who may feel affronted we apologise and to those now offering memories or new information, we ask them to continue to do so for the story of Peter Tavy is rich in history and the Heritage Group wants to preserve it. Page 14. Peek should read Prout. p.19. The Harvie family went to Brousentor in 1908. The photo taken in 1910 shows Pollie Harvie standing outside. p.20. It is now known that the Perkins family did not buy but leased Gatehouse Farm from the Roskilly family. p.26. Centre photograph of Winter 1962-63 not 83-84. p.47. Edward Bellamy farms at Coxtor, not Roger who farms at Headlands. p.54. The extract was drawn from, ‘Legends, Superstitions and Sketches of Devonshire on the Borders of the Tamar and the Tavy illustrative of its Manners, Customs, History,Antiquities,Scenery, and Natural History’ published in 1844. p.55. The bridge at Higher Mill probably built between 1880-1890. p.55 The dormer window seen in the picture shed light into the upper storey and is not believed to have been used for raising corn. p.59. delete ‘known as Nellie’, after Edith Lane and on p.64. Delete Nellie and substitute Edith for the photo on the top right. p.64 The shop closed at Christmas 1994, Alan & Sylvia left in 1996. p.68 John & Gill Diprose followed John Vaughan & Rita Westlake, Hanke should read Hawke. p.75 Johnnie Phillips lived with his brother Walter who outlived him. p.75. Caption to photo should read Eliza Harvie of Hilltown. p.111 Mrs Merritt was at the school from 1950 – 53. Miss Wood left in 1957 p.113 Hillbridge School was not sold by the church until 1974 p.135.
