This post-war advertisement must have been amongst the last before Smedley's ceased to trade as a hydropathic establishment, bringing to an end over a hundred years of trading in Matlock. The building remains, of course, but became County Hall. In 1950 it was still providing treatments for the sick ("Invalids") but also catered for those wishing to holiday in the area. It is interesting that, over fifty years later, hydropathic treatments are still available and health farms have taken over from hydropathic establishments. |
