Jon Etchells Consulting

Projects

A selection of projects is set out below, illustrating the range of experience which JEC can bring to bear. Some of this work was undertaken by Jon Etchells in previous employment (he has worked at senior level for two of the UK’s largest multi-disciplinary consultancies), but he has been personally responsible for all of the inputs described.

A13 Thames Gateway DBFO

Environmental co-ordination for this major highway scheme, being tendered under the UK government’s Private Finance Initiative. JEC role includes responsibility for supervision of other consultants and for the incorporation of landscape, ecology, archaeology and other environmental concerns into the tender documents. Also includes writing of a Landscape Strategy for the A13, to determine the visual quality and appearance of all hard landscape areas over the 30 year contract period.

Norton Common, Letchworth

Concept design, presentation for public consultation and costings for Millennium Fund application for a comprehensive refurbishment of this historic open space. Design sought to balance historic concerns with contemporary leisure needs, and included the creation of a linked series of lakes, for recreation and nature conservation benefit.

Parks and Open Spaces Strategy for Swale Borough Council, Kent

Preparation of a comprehensive strategy setting out options for the future management and development of all the open spaces within the Borough. The strategy was based on an extensive survey of open spaces and on a questionnaire survey of local residents.

Hesketh Park, Dartford, Kent

Detailed design and site supervision for refurbishment of this intensively used play area, including a children’s cycle track and kickabout area.

Larnaca Bypass, Cyprus

General advice to Cyprus-based consultants on environmental assessment standards and techniques, and provision of specialist landscape inputs to study of two alternative alignments for a major new road, comparing overall environmental and economic impacts.

Mepal Landfill Site, Cambridgeshire

Landscape assessment and mitigation proposals for proposed domestic waste landfill site in a visually sensitive area. Work included determination of Visual Envelope, visual assessment and restoration proposals, for inclusion in the Environmental Statement.

Biggleswade Market Square, Bedfordshire

RIBA competition-winning entry for the pedestrianisation and refurbishment of this historic market square. Proposals included a new bus station, increase in areas of paving and tree planting, and retention and rationalisation of the existing market.

Parc Menai Business Park, North Wales

Responsible for all stages of this prestigious project for the Welsh Development Agency, from feasibility through to detailed design. The park has now been successfully implemented within a high quality landscape setting, incorporating a series of newly-created lakes and the retention and management of areas of existing woodland.

RAF National Golf Course, Cambridgeshire

Feasibility study for proposed national golf course for the Royal Air Force, on a former airfield site, covering all environmental and planning issues. Work included an outline design for the golf course, and budget costings to enable funding to be sought.

Hereward Centre, Peterborough

Design and site supervision for part-pedestrianisation of roads around this refurbished shopping area close to the city centre. Work included design and detailing of all hard landscape areas and features, including drainage, lighting and areas for vehicular use.

Image Standards for Burger King (Europe)

Production of ‘Image Standards’ for Burger King to control and provide guidance on landscape design for new restaurants throughout Europe, including advice on plant selection for different climates and sample layouts.

Letchworth Urban Gateways

Production of feasibility study into proposals to improve the five main road entry points into the town in visual terms, to create a sense of arrival and distinctiveness for the world’s first Garden City. Proposals were accepted in principle and work is now proceeding towards the first stage of implementation, with a major landscape contract in 1997/98.

Westgate Brewery, Bury St Edmunds

Landscape inputs to proposals for a new access road to the Greene King brewery and headquarters in the historic core of Bury St Edmunds. Work included assessment of visual impact and vegetation loss, and proposals for new planting to mitigate those impacts, as well as for the creation of a new, natural open space, with a wildflower meadow and ponds, all designed for nature conservation benefit.
