Penrhiwgaer is about 5 km / 3 miles from the A44 trunk road and just 24 km / 15 miles east of Aberystwyth … and around 300 km / 200 miles from London. See our map to see where we are located.

Your mobile phone may not work in the area, because of the mountains and small number of masts. Orange works best.

BY ROAD FROM THE A44 TRUNK ROAD

About 1 km / 0.5 mile West of the village of Ponterwyd, which is the first "civilisation" after passing westwards through the Cambrian Mountains (and about 24 km / 15 miles east of Aberystwyth) turn left onto a very minor road signposted Ystumtuen. Carry "straight" on along this road for approximately 2.7 km / 1.7 miles, passing through the village of Ystumtuen and ignoring any turnings to right or left. In so doing, you climb a very steep hill then drop down into Ystumtuen, after which the road climbs again to a sharp right bend; here, the Rheidol Valley opens out in front of you and you catch your first glimpse of the sea. From this bend, we are just another 200 m / 200 yds - see the name on the gate.
On a fine day we recommend the more scenic route, just a bit longer, which is to take the second turning off the A44 to Ystumtuen, about a mile further along the main road (look for the wind farm to your left). Then follow the instructions below.

COMING FROM ABERYSTWYTH
If you are coming from Aberystwyth direction, take the right turn signposted Ystumtuen just beyond the Visitor Centre and then turn left at the top of the hill, after going past the wind farm. Follow the road to the T-junction (the village is just to the left) and turn right, up the rise to the sharp right bend, at which point the Rheidol Valley opens out in front of you. From this bend, we are just another 200 m / 200 yds - see the name on the gate. This route is more scenic but takes 2-3 minutes longer than the route above. On a fine day it is worth the extra time.

TRAVELLING BY TRAIN
There are 10 trains a day to Aberystwyth (National Rail), via Machynlleth, where you change from Birmingham or Manchester (or anywhere else). From the station, you can travel by local bus (Ceredigion County Council, public transport), by taxi (about £20), we can pick you up (by prior arrangement only), or you can take the scenic route by the Rheidol Valley steam railway, in season, to Devil's Bridge and then ... call us (also by prior arrangement only). We can see Devil's Bridge, it is close, but there is a steep valley between us and so it is about 15 minutes' drive away.

TRAVELLING BY BUS / COACH

You can catch a coach or local bus (Ceredigion County Council, public transport). Coaches from Birmingham or London stop at Ponterwyd and we can collect you from there (by prior arrangement only); similarly for the return journey

TRAVELLING BY AIR
Nearest airports are Birmingham, Manchester, Cardiff, all of which are about 200 km / 125 miles away. Train (or coach) service to Aberystwyth. Any of the London airports will mean a train or coach journey, see above.
