The population is very unequally distributed over the four parts of the UK: England makes up three-qurters of the total population, Wales around 5%, Scotland roughly 10% and Northern Ireland less than 3%. England's population density, at 376 people per sq km, is more than treble the European average of 117 people per sq km.

Wales and especially Ceredigion is a wild area, which enables astronomers to look at the stars without interference from "civilisation" (especially light pollution).

Ceredigion has a population of less than 70,000 and its largest town Aberystwyth fluctuates between 12,000 and 20,000 depending on whether it is university term-time.

Penrhriwgaer offers an unobstructed view of the heavens, which is almost a perfect hemisphere with virtually zero light pollution.
