THE ISLT PROGRAMME

The International Sacred Literature Trust is a registered charity that works with faith communities and their scholars to select and translate significant sacred texts that are not widely available in contemporary English and/or are poorly translated. We publish our Sacred Literature Series internationally with AltaMira Press, a division of Sage Publications, Inc.

Our books range from the Dreaming stories of the Australian Aborigines to chanted sermons of the early Christian Church and nineteenth-century teachings of Tibetan Buddhism. They are funded by organisations and individuals from relevant faiths and by those who support the interfaith and literary aims of the ISLT. We seek texts that fulfil at least two of  the following criteria:

  • are specifically needed in English for an identifiable community

  • are spiritually progressive, uplifting or challenging

  • will appeal to and inspire young people

  • are outstanding literature both in the original and in translation

  • will make available voices that have not been widely heard, such as those of      women and those from smaller and indigenous faith communities.

All Sacred Literature books have introductions which address the issues central to faiths and texts, and discuss their contemporary significance. For further information about our books, refer to the heading Sacred Literature Series.
