Although this year we are thinking of the end of World War 2, we cannot forget the terrible events of 1914-1918. People then 'did their bit' at home, as they did in the 1940s. Occasionally one comes across reminders: such a reminder has come to light in a printed notice for 1917, when a Jumble Sale was organised on November 14th by local farmers for Red Cross funds. This took place at Alcester Stock Sale Ground, which one entered from Seggs Lane; this was behind the site of the present medical centre on Priory Road. The names of the donors will still ring a bell with many present-day Alcestrians. Some of the gifts were:-

A.R. Crouch - tobacco. A.H. Whitehead - cheese.
Mrs. Cubberley - steel fender F. Butler - half ton of coal.

J. Burden - iron rack and manger

S. Careless - chickens.
H. Rimmell - fat sheep. G. Masters - 2 store pigs.
W. Gorle - pot potatoes T. Griffin - 2 cwt. potatoes.
F. E. Golbourne - load of wheat straw C. Corbett - bag beans.
H. Davidson - sack of beans W & F. Smith - pork pig.
Spencer Son & Hancox - 2 bags flour D. Golbourne - sack of beans.

There were dozens more gifts and many monetary contributions, with such names as Sisam, Finnemore, Hitchings, Spencer, Jackson, Heath, Slatter and Collett.
