All the parishes straddling the River Arrow needed crossings -- Coughton had a ford and still has; Wixford had one for centuries, as did Salford and Bidford (over the Avon). Spernall was probably not big enough nor important enough to warrant a bridge and, in fact, did not get one until 1922. That is, a road bridge. Estate maps of 1695 and 1746 show what is probably a foot bridge: such a crossing is definitely indicated on the 6" O.S. map of 1886. This point on the River Arrow occasionally flooded badly, as in May, 1811, when the water came within 1" of the top of the hall door sill at the rectory (parish records). The present bridge is raised to sufficient height to stand above all but the most extreme of floods. There is now no separate footbridge. spbridg.gif (5264 bytes)
