Bridle Path:
Path suitable for pedestrians and horses, from which vehicles are legally banned
Drove Road:
Of ancient origin, not subject to toll: used for long distance herding of animals to
market towns, not normally under repair by local authorities.
Gate:
A term of mediaeval England for a road
Portway:
Highway leading to a town which normally had a gateway
Salt Way:
Roads leading from salt boiling areas, such as Droitwich
Turnpike Roads:
Most of these came into being in the 18th century. Trusts were formed to maintain proper
roads suitable for wheeled traffic and to collect tolls to defray expenses (toll huse
keepers often called pikemen)
