EQUAL PEOPLE LAUNCH IS TRIPLE CAUSE FOR CELEBRATION

The Open University has launched the a new OU study pack, Learning Disability: Working as Equal People.

What makes Equal People unique is that it is the first time people with learning difficulties have taken part in producing an OU pack as full members of the course team. For two years members of the London-based self-advocacy group People First worked alongside academics and advisors on the content, style, design and testing of Equal People.

It is particularly appropriate that the results of this pioneering partnership are being launched in the 25th anniversary year of the 1971 Education Act, which finally enshrined in law the right of people with learning difficulties to have the same education as everyone else, and in the year Mencap celebrates its 50th birthday.

We believe Equal People also represents another first - the first further education course which aims to be fully accessible to those with learning difficulties, their families and their carers.

The launch takes place at Hoare Memorial Hall, Church House Conference Centre, Dean's Yard, Westminster, and there will be plenty of opportunity for journalists to chat to all the members of the course team and representatives from People First and Mencap.

If you would like more details about the pack, or are unable to come and would like to receive a press pack, please contact Helen Neville on 01908 654204.
