PAUL PARKER – Former
England International who was appointed to the managerial hot-seat during the
summer following an 18-month stint as first-team coach. Best known for his time
spent with Manchester United, he has also worn the colours of Fulham, Queens
Park Rangers and Chelsea as well as brief spells on the books of Heybridge
Swifts and Ashford Town.
LIAM CUTBUSH – Re-joined
the Clarets as number two to Paul Parker following a notable contribution as
manager of Heybridge Swifts. His somewhat nomadic playing days included a
lengthy stay at City as well as appearing for Tiptree United, Braintree Town,
Dartford, Grays Athletic, Aveley, Heybridge, Witham Town and Saffron Walden.
RICHARD HURST – Goalkeeper
who signed from St. Albans in July 2001 having started his career with Queens
Park Rangers with whom he spent six years. Has also played for Kingstonian, and
has enjoyed a number of terrific games for Chelmsford since his recruitment.
GARRY CROSS –
Chelmsford-born full-back who spent the latter part of last season with Slough
Town after being released by Southend United in January. Made around twenty
Nationwide League appearances for the Roots Hall club and signed for the Clarets
in July 2001.
RICHARD SKELLY – Classy
defender or midfielder who experienced a handful of Football League outings for
both Cambridge United and Northampton Town before switching to King’s Lynn six
years ago. Having initially been with Newmarket Town, he has also played for
Cambridge City from whom Chelmsford signed him prior to the 2001/02 campaign.
IAN COUSINS – Summer 2000
capture from Burnham Ramblers whose season was wrecked by injury following a
string of marvellous displays at left-back that alerted several Nationwide
League clubs. Was on Spurs’ books as a youngster where he enjoyed considerable
success within their Youth set-up. He returned to his former club early in the
season to gain match-fitness, this after being a serious target for Dover
Athletic in the summer.
KEVIN DOBINSON – Skipper
and crowd favourite who began his career at Ipswich Town before being released
by the Premiership outfit, with Chelmsford being the fortunate club to gain his
signature. Made significant progress in the youth team to gain a regular
midfield place in the first-team some four years ago and made his 100th
senior appearance for the club earlier this season.
BEN LEWIS – Dominant
central defender who was ever-present during last season’s league matches
after transferring from Heybridge Swifts in March 2000. Having previously played
Nationwide League football for both Colchester United and Southend United, his
experience proved vital when the going got tough. Has already shown his
versatility this season by filling the right-back position.
JOHN BISHOP - Summer 1999
signing from Braintree Town who made his name on the local non-League scene with
almost a decade of stirring performances at centre-half for ‘Iron’,
punctuated by a short stay at Sudbury Town in 1996. Chalked up almost 400
appearances for Braintree until joining Chelmsford who had sought his signature
for several months before eventually concluding his transfer. Injury restricted
his appearances last season, his absence not doing the defence any favours.
MARK KEEN – Veteran central
defender who re-joined City in the close season following his departure from
Dagenham & Redbridge. In a varied career, his other previous clubs include
Witham Town, Dartford, Enfield, Heybridge Swifts, St. Albans and Braintree Town.
Has also played up front when required, as well as being called upon to play in
goal on more than one occasion.
BRIAN STATHAM – Former
Tottenham Hotspur defender who came to the club in October 2001 having parted
company with Chesham United. Born in Zimbabwe, he has also played professionally
for Brentford and Gillingham. Made forty league appearances for Chesham last
season, scoring seven goals.
IAN WILES – Versatile
defender who moved from Heybridge Swifts to Chelmsford in June 2001. Was with
Colchester United during his teenage years and earned a good reputation at
City’s neighbours following a succession of classy displays. Has quickly
established himself in the City side, showing just why he is rated so highly.
MARK ADAMS – Yet another
new signing whose previous non-League clubs include Sudbury Town, Cambridge City
and Braintree Town. Midfielder who began his career with Peterborough United and
finally made the switch to his local club in August 2001 after previously being
linked with the Clarets.
CHRIS PAYNE – Left-sided
player who began his non-League career with local Essex Senior League side
Brentwood and then moved onto Dagenham & Redbridge, Billericay Town, Canvey
Island and Heybridge Swifts. Made his full Chelmsford debut in the 3-0 win at
Newport IoW.
GARY WRAIGHT – Midfielder signed from St. Albans
City on a loan basis during October 2001 following an injury crisis in the City
squad. Last season he played eight Conference matches for Stevenage Borough
before transferring to St. Albans where he made 21 league appearances, scoring
twice. Also has previous experience at Wycombe Wanderers.
RUSSELL WILLIAMSON – Speedy
forward or midfielder who was surprisingly freed by Southend United after making
nearly thirty senior appearances at Roots Hall last season. Went to Dagenham
& Redbridge during pre-season but City quickly stepped in to secure his
services on a two-year contract.
IAN CAMBRIDGE – Gifted
striker who plundered 31 goals for Chelmsford in 1998-99, a tally that
understandably brought him the ‘Player of the Year’ award. He then returned
to Cambridge City for a third time but came back to Essex, also for a third
spell, just prior to the current season after turning down a good offer from
Dover Athletic. His other former clubs include Foxton and King’s Lynn.
JUNIOR SAMUELS – Scored his
first goal for City in the 1-1 draw with Tamworth having joined the club in
mid-August. Has plenty of experience at non-League level, particularly with
Boreham Wood where he spent many fruitful years, netting on a regular basis.
Amongst his other former clubs are Leytonstone & Ilford, Leyton Wingate,
Bromley and Collier Row.
DANNY HOCKTON – Former
Millwall striker who joined Chelmsford from Dover Athletic for £7,000 in August
2001. Made a handful of League appearances for the Lions and has also sampled
Conference football with Stevenage Borough. Made fifteen starts for Dover last
season, a period in which he scored a dozen goals and reached double figures for
the Clarets as early as October.
KRIS LEE – Club record
signing who was joint top scorer in the Ryman League last season, netting some
thirty goals for Heybridge Swifts. Switched to Chelmsford in a £15,000 deal
despite strong interest from both Stevenage Borough and Farnborough Town. Had
trials with Cambridge United and Colchester United in pre-season but City’s
perseverance finally paid off in September 2001. Initially made a name for
himself in the Jewson League with Tiptree United.
