30th Birthday of CAMRA in Cumbria
The first CAMRA branch to be formed in Cumbria in 1976 was North Cumbria [now Solway] branch. Later the same year, the West Cumbria and
Western Lakes branch was formed at a meeting in the snug/back bar of the Dolphin [later Sal Madges and currently North]. Bob Perry,
the first Chairman of the branch, had been a founder member of the North Cumbria Branch. Furness branch and the Lakes branch followed
shortly after, completing the four original Cumbria Branches.
Unfortunately in the early 1980s the Lakes branch folded, but later saw a renaissance becoming the Westmorland branch.
None of the original West Cumbria branch members are currently active, but some still live and work in the area and can be seen still
supporting the Campaign at events such as beer festivals.
During the year it is the intention of the Cumbrian branches of CAMRA to organise a number of events to celebrate our 30th Birthday.
One idea is to put together a "pictorial" history of the branch, for display at the Whitehaven Beer Festival (6th - 7th October).
If anyone, particularly former members, has any photographs or other information relating to the early days of the branch, please
get in touch either via What Ales or the Branch Web Site.
