According to recent CAMRA research, the ideal pub for most British adults is a country pub with clean bars and toilets, friendly landlord and locals, live entertainment but no sports on TV, quality food and beer, and a no smoking area.

From the survey 91% said that cleanliness of the bar area and cleanliness of the toilets were the most important factors. This was followed by 90% rating friendliness of the bar staff as most important. Only 21% thought that sports on TV was important in choice of pub, and 53% thought that having a non smoking area was important. 46% favoured country pubs and 25% a community local. Only 11% would prefer a themed town centre pub. 63% thought that local communities should have the chance to buy a pub if it was threatened with closure
