Traditions / Well Dressings

The beautiful old custom of well dressing is all but unique to Derbyshire. It is the art of decorating wells or springs with pictures from natural growing things. They take hours to complete, often with villagers working through the night to finish in the early hours of the first festival morning. The festival originated in pagan times to worship water, but was forbidden by early Christians.
