These are poems by Flintshire Disability Forum member Michael W. Williams from Connah's Quay:

Does He Take Sugar?

Does he take sugar in his tea?'
'Hello! Why not ask me?
I might have a disability
but to answer for myself, I still have the ability
Just because I'm in a wheelchair!'
'It's not that people don't care
That much I know
but it's a problem wherever I go'.
'Just 'cos I'm not stood up like you
does not mean there is very little for myself that I can do'.
'Some people think we're sick
and others, probably a little thick'.
'Well, how many 'O' Levels have you got?
As many as me I'll bet not!
I also have a university honours degree!
A brainy sod that's me
To my mum people will say: 'Is this your son?
Tell me how's he getting on?'
Mum's reply is: 'Well he's certainly not dim,
so, why don't you ask him?'

So, What has Michael Been Up To?

Well, whilst on Operation Raleigh
I suffered a near-fatal head injury!
I tumbled down a scree slope;
but did that finish me off? Nope!
I took hold of my life with both hands and would not be killed,
as many more adventurous gaps had yet to be filled!
I was air-lifted to hospital in Panama,
where I lay in a coma.
In Chester hospital I eventually came 'round!
"He'll never make another sound,"
so the doctors all said.
"In fact, he's very lucky he's not dead!"
My mum was told: "Never again will he walk,
nor even talk!"
Mum would not accept this,
even thoough part of my life I had to miss!
Things to do I still had a lot
and to admit defeat I certainly would not!
I now wobble about on an elbow crutch,
which may not sound like very much,
but it hurts like hell
when apart from paralysis I am very well!
