Kings Head Hotel in the Market Square

Bricks were not used in the town until the early 1700's. Local clays however are not well suited to brick making and there are not many examples of the craft. The King's Head Hotel has stone window sills, quoins and surrounds for both decoration and added strength.

A portrait (at the top of the stairs) in the King's Head is said to be of Frances I'Anson about whom the song "Lass of Richmond Hill" was written. Leonard McNally a poet and lawyer wrote the song. She must have been impressed as they married in 1787. Hill house where she lived is on the eastern outskirts of the town.
