The Keep

|
This massive structure was begun about 1171, some 100 years after the first castle was built. |

|
The large opening into the keep from the inside of the Castle gives access to the ground floor. Originally however this was the main doorway into the Castle. It was subsequently closed off for greater security. |

The entrance was moved to the first floor, for greater security. However the Keep was also a residence. At ground floor level it had its own well. On the first floor there are four small chambers and one large one with a huge pillar in it to support the floor above. On the second floor is the Great Hall, used by the Constable of the Castle for meeting and entertaining important guests. |

Straight stairs in the thickness of the walls give access up through the Lip to the battlements and turret. The Keep is about 75 metres (100 feet) high. From the top you can see the market place which echoes the shape of the outer court of the castle. |
