How do I translate?

Because my Japanese isn't shockingly good, the most of these translations are computer-aided to some or other extent. Generally I use JWP, a highly useful (if utilitarian) Japanese word processor, with such handy modern conveniences as kanji lookups and a big dictionary. Oh, and it's conveniently free (under the GNU Public License)
A quick scan of my bookshelf also reveals :

Kanji & Kana (Wolfgang Hadamitzky & Mark Spahn): A slim but very useful hardback Kanji reference. Also (as the title suggests) covers Kana, although I've never used that section. Actually, I don't use this much at all now, as JWP's Kanji lookup features are much faster

A Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar
(Seiichi Makino & Michio Tsutsui): Brilliant. Invaluable. Indispensible. This thick work covers more or less everything you could want to know about Japanese grammar.

Basic Japanese-English Dictionary (The Japan Foundation): As it says. Your basic Japanese-English dictionary, indexed by Romaji but with entries in both English and Kanji / Kana. Not as large as JWP's in terms of entries, but much more in-depth.

Mastering Japanese (Harry Guest): A well-written and approachable introduction to Japanese language and culture. Out of all such books I've seen, this is the one I'd recommend.
