I
teach Research methods / research awareness on a variety of
courses. These include the post-registration
module Evidence, Research & Practice
which is currently offered at the Bath, Bristol, Gloucester
and Swindon Centres; the dissertation module "Research
in Specialist Community Practice" on the BSc (Hons)
Health and Community Practice; and the Project /
Dissertation module for the pre-registration BSc (Hons) /
DipHE nursing courses.
Manual
Handling - I have been involved with manual
handling training workshops within the faculty, and also
"in-house" workshops and consultancy for local
health, social care and education services, including
the private sector.
I
have also provided teaching and workshops on managing
aggression and violence with clients with head injuries;
study skills courses; continence, IT skills; and behaviour
therapy with people with learning disabilities.

Research
|
|
|
I
have completed a
study of patient advocacy in nursing to investigate
the nature and extent of patient advocacy in nursing
practice, and the characteristics that distinguish nurses
who are "active" as patient advocates from those
who are not. A draft of my MSc Dissertation for which I
conducted this study, is available
here
in Adobe pdf format.
I
developed an instrument for this study, the Patient
Advocacy Scale (PAS) which has been used in a number of
studies in US and Europe, most recently in Portugal.
I
have previously completed some small scale studies:
"The Experience of Advocacy" which adopted a
phenomenological approach to investigate the experience
patient advocacy amongst oncology nurses; and
"Attitudes to De-institutionalisation" which
investigated the attitudes of care staff in a learning
disabilities hospital, to hospital closure and community
care.
I
am interested in conducting research to investigate the use
and experience of physical restraint in Mental Health &
Learning Disability nursing.
