What students say about the course

Back to the Prospectus

I've become another statistic for the course, securing a copywriting job at the beginning of August. It was originally a three-month contract, but things have gone well and I'm now a permanent employee. The agency is XXXXXX in Cheltenham. We have some big brands like CNN and Dr. Pepper, and compete with London agencies. - Sarah Crompton, Cheltenham

Thank you for your prompt email advice regarding the price of my newsletter for XXXXX. As you said, I suggested £650 plus costs, and it was immediately accepted by the client. I now have a firm order for 6 issues a year. Also, this has facilitated my entry into a similar big business (electricity supplies) and I got a contract from them too - they publish 8 different newsletters to various targets. I don't know which I'll get to write but it will be at least one of them!

One last word: the Institute has been invaluable to me - I make a living out of writing, and I am my own boss. - Pascale Purcell, Gimbrett, France

I'm already working as a professional copywriter, as you'll remember from my letter to you in February. Your comments made a real difference to my life, in that they helped me land a job which, in truth, I wasn't qualified for. If it wasn't for people like you, people like me would stack shelves their whole lives. - Mark Owen, Canford Heath, Poole

You'll be glad to know that your lessons are having a continued impact on my BT work. I have had one of my suggestions for a product name for a fraud detection service accepted by a BT product line. The name, Switchmaster, is being vetted and registered by BT's solicitors and corporate relations people. Once it's been passed, I'll be producing the product literature. - Malcolm Highfield, Northampton.

I have been doing some work for a local solicitor. I have created an advert, written an editorial, and am working on some direct mail for him at the moment. - Rosamunde Bott, Daventry, Northants.

The good thing is, I have accomplished something that I have only ever dreamed of. I have earned money from something I have written. To be precise I have earned over £1,000 and I have only done four of your assignments. - John Bancroft, Hastings, East Sussex.

I have obtained a position as a trainee creative copywriter at a leading sales promotion company based in Kent. - Martin Gent, Walton on Thames, Surrey.

The course has given me a new optimism and purpose after the demoralising effects of redundancy and unemployment. I now find myself looking forward instead of backward. I have enjoyed the course, and to be honest, much more than I initially expected. - Alan Jones

I have in the last few weeks received several enquiries about my copywriting service and will almost certainly be called upon to help launch a brand new publication on time management aimed at the home business market place. - Neil Ogden, Tadley, Hants.

Sending this material to the XXX trade association provided me with my very first client. On the day they received it, a member phoned the organisation asking for advice on re-writing a sales letter. they recommended me and I have since prepared a direct mail letter and a brochure....The result was not earth shattering even for a first attempt but the client seems very satisfied and has sent me a cheque for £80 along with the promise of more work.

Since drafting the assignment, I've completed work for a second client.... In view of the urgency ( he phoned me on Friday evening and wanted the material the following afternoon) I quoted him a fee of £120. Surprisingly he agreed to a this, but I suppose it was money well spent as he got the job in spite of stiff competition, apparently on the strength of [my work]. - Richard Mitchell, Newtownards, Northern Ireland

You will be pleased to know that I am currently employed as a PR/marketing executive with a marketing and communications agency. My work entails writing copy for ads, brochures, newsletter and press releases for the agency's client ...Your course is even more relevant to me now, and your tips and guidelines are helping me no end. My work at the agency is exactly like the assignments for this course. - Rebecca d'Ugo, Malta

The course itself was a model of its teaching: to the point, straightforward, clearly set out and wise as to the ways of advertising and marketing. It will be a constant guide and point of reference. - Richard Aldred, Aberdeen.

The assignments in particular have been extremely useful in helping me to refine my writing skills and introducing me to new areas, such as radio commercials. The feedback you've given me has been particularly invaluable in encouraging me to develop ideas and expand my thinking. - John Lee, Tetney, NE Lincs.

I am an honours graduate with postgraduate and professional marketing management qualifications. I only wish I had discovered the course before. - N Dingley, Birmingham

I am very grateful for your kind, thorough and constructive tuition throughout. I have learned a great deal. ...Most certainly, I will keep in touch with progress. At present, I am involved in two video scripting projects; one for a music CD sleeve liner, the other for a promo video for a residential home for the elderly for an exercise and activity programme. - Geoffrey Annis, Hessle, E Yorkshire

I think I may have my first client - PR though, rather than straight copywriting. This is a Grant Maintained School, one of which I canvassed on a no take/no fee basis, but I hope will retain me for a campaign. The whole exercise seems very much like angling and the fish is taking a lot of line before it can be landed. - Elizabeth Hall, Edgbaston, Birmingham

I am constantly reminded how instructive and rewarding your correspondence course in copywriting has been for me. highly useful in our music business and very rewarding in working for occasional individual clients. My confidence is growing all the time, and your manual is the key to that. - Jenny Pope, Bristol.

I could not have achieved the award without your professional help. Getting your honest and constructive feedback was motivating and kept me in touch with the realities of learning my craft. You have been generous in sharing your wisdom experience and skills. - Alice Birch, Warwick.

I now handle UK and US publicity for a local potter who makes musical instruments from stoneware. His wife has invented a cot that prevents back strain. A week ago I sent a press release to 13 medical, nursing and parent magazines. I have also managed to secure a commission writing about the potter for Ceramics Monthly, the best ceramic magazine in the world. I have made back my course fee before the end of the course.... Maybe doing the course has just shifted my perception of myself? Joanna Parfitt, Stamford, Lincs

I have been asked by XXXXX, a local advertising agency, to write all of their direct mail letters. They do not usually need that many per year (it's a service they have never offered to their clients before, but apparently clients are now demanding direct mail letters as part of their advertising package. - John Bancroft, Hastings, East Sussex.

It's helped, of course, that I have managed to get quite a few commissions whilst doing the course. I've been able to apply the theory as I went along. During the year, I've produced press releases - almost a dozen for the local press and four in Darts World, direct mail shots, advertisements, posters and brochures. It's been great fun and I've met a lot of interesting people,. A bit hand-to-mouth at times, and a certain amount of bluff but everything seems to have turned out all right. So thanks very much! Add me to your list of endorsers. - Madeline Lord, Loughborough.

I would urge anyone interested in a career in copywriting to enrol. It's well worth every penny. And then some. - Andrew Saunders, Porthcawl, mid-Glamorgan
