Windows 2000 Server

 

Windows 2000 Server is the Microsoft multipurpose network operating system for business of all sizes. It allows customers to:

  • Share files across networks

  • Build Web applications and connect to the Internet securely

  • Run thousands of business applications built to operate on Windows 2000 Server

  • Increase productivity through easy-to-use and manage centralized administration tools

 It includes:

Internet Information Services 5.0 (IIS)

Integrated Web services enable users to host and manage Web sites to share information and extend file, print media, and communication services to the Web.

 

Terminal Services:

Run Windows-based applications on the server and access from a remoter PC, Windows-based terminal, or non-Windows device, over the LANs, WANs or low-bandwidth connection, through terminal emulation software. (To run Terminal Services, your desktop must be covered by a Windows 2000 Professional, Windows XP Professional or Terminal Services Client license)

 

What if I don’t need all these advanced features?

Windows 2000 Server is highly configurable. If you do not have a need for a particular feature, it will not be installed or configured, conserving valuable resources on the server. These features can be install and configure when you requirement change.

 

Does Windows 2000 Server require Active Directory?

No. Windows does not require Active Directory. You can gain immediate benefits for many services, including file and print services before installing Active Directory. Some more advanced feature do require Active Directory installing and configuring.
