Cyprus Trip March 2002Some basic rules if you ever end up out there...
1. Before you sit down for your meal - always ask if they take VISA regardless of any VISA signs - always ask if what you want is available!! - and common, when you're in Cyprus, get off the burgers and chips!!!
2. Car hire in Cyprus: Do your best to hire a car, maybe better off to hire one once you're out there - All signposts and road marking are as in the UK - DO NOT SPEED!!!! The buggers are at every stretch with their Laser speed guns pulling people over - and there's enough of them!! - Prices for car hire range from CYŁ10 per day for a Suzuki Alto to CYŁ90 and higher for an MR2 Roadster <droool>. - Places in the UK to book: HolidayAutos, Europcar - Places in Cyprus to try online: Force Rent-a-car
3. Decide on which Oakley before you go out there!! ;) - If you spend over CYŁ100 you get the Tax back at the airport. Get the form Tax refund from the outlet; on your way back at the airport take it to the declaration desk before passport control, go through passport control and head towards the canteen bit and the Tax refund kiosk is hidden away at your far right - behind you!! Otherwise you'll end up waiting four weeks! - Price guide, look it up here: Geared Up
Places to stay...
We stayed in Ayia Napa / Agia Napa at Anthea Hotel Apartments - a 'Class A' hotel which is equivalent to a three start hotel!! There are TWO pools not three and the second pool is big enough to fit five people - standing!
If you have any problems then talk to Maria, she the big boy, and very helpful.
If you're driving then Lemisos is probably the ideal bit of the island to stay. Easy reach of all the funky places to visit. Agia Napa is minutes drive away from Paralimni and Protaras.
Places to avoid at all cost...
Fish Four Restaurant at Paralimni. Nice looking little place from the outside with promising food on the menu board outside, none of the stuff was available when we sat down. Their food is not Cyprian, Ukrainian I think, and nothing special. They didn't take VISA, regardless of the sign on the Window; we only found out when we got the bill; and it took a long winded argument to convince the owner that we had to go to the bank to get cash and come back, we were short of escorted to the cash machine to make sure we paid! If they don't get slapped by VISA then Fish Four may have something to say about the blatant use of their corporate logo!!
Oh and if you choke on a bone in your boneless fish dish, don't believe what they say, you're not the first!
A complete waste of an evening and money.
Places to try when you're out there...
Arkadia Restaurant In Agia Napa - heading away from Nissi beach. strongly recommended; if you eat anywhere in Cyprus then make sure Arkadia's one of them!
Try the Mezzes if you can, extremely impressive. Meal for two there cost CYŁ25/GBŁ28
Custus Tavern Be there on a Thursday night if you want a taste of the local music (starts about 9pm), you won't get a menu or a price list, they only serve Mezzes - works out to about CYŁ9 a head with a bottle of the local KEO wine. Starts light with salads and dips and before you know it you're looking at the twentieth dish on your table feeling dizzy 'cause you've eaten too much.
Lemonari Tavern Cosy little family run place we came across on the way back from The food was great, atmosphere was very nice and strongly recommended!
Markos Restaurant By Nissi harbour - if you follow your nose to the beach it's at the very end, you can't miss it. Food's ok, prices are same as everywhere else, it's worth a try. Unlike most other restaurants we went to, in Markos we seemed to get treated like tourists they never expect to see back! Hey, not far from the truth there!
Thanks all folks, if you've made it this far down the page then hello Greg, and if you're not Greg then have a nice time in Cyprus. ;)
