Record Breaking
Selection!
For the umpteenth year in a row, Branch Secretary and
Webmaster John
Gillatt was selected to be the Branch's
annual sacrificial
lamb candidate for Heaton and Lostock in the 2007 local elections,
following a pretty good showing in May this year! With the incredible
popularity of the Labour leadership nationally, the Iraq war going so well and
everything else being absolutely "tickety boo" on the political front John said
that he was quietly confident. So quiet, in fact, that he hid in an corner and
wimpered all night long after the selection.

"Forget About The World Cup"
Barbecue at Graham and Anne's House
We had our annual branch barbecue on a very warm and sultry Saturday night, thankfully avoiding England's World Cup appearance. Ruth and her family joined us as did MEP Gary Titley and a host of other VIPs (the local Party members), their families, friends and neighbours.
An excellent time was had
by one and all and we raised a lot of dosh towards the "Elect Ruth For A
Fourth Time"
fund!!

Local Election day - Hail The
Heroic Loser!
Well, in the month or so to local election day on Thursday May 4th we fought the good fight and Branch Secretary John Gillatt was delighted to come a close second to the unexpected Tory victor! Interviewed just after the count John said, "I'm delighted to have come second after the Tory victor". The last time he fought the seat in the all-out election of May 2004 John was pushed into third place by the Lib-Dem candidates. "Revenge is sweet", he said!
Overall in Bolton we did amazingly well, considering the very disappointing results for Labour nationally. We gained two seats, the Tories gained two and the Lib-Dems lost four. Since then one Lib-Dem councillor in Westhoughton (Arthur Price) has come over to us and another (in Crompton Ward) has resigned. There will be a by-election in July which we stand a good chance of winning (we did win!).
As a result Labour has taken de-facto control of the Council with Heaton & Lostock Branch member Cllr. Clifford Morris as Leader of the Council
John Gillatt (Labour) 828 -0.43% Colin Shaw (Conservative 3,329 +5.65% Andrew Snowden (Liberal Democrat) 668 -5.52% Total Votes 4825 46%

Branch Discussion "Adult
Education in Bolton"
At our April meeting, despite the excitement of the local election campaign, we still found time to talk politics and there was a general discussion amongst members about the state of Adult Education in Bolton. You can see the full details of the discussion here or by following the Talks/Discussions link from Contents on the left.
March 1st 2006
Branch Meeting - Cllr Akhtar
Zaman "License for Change"
In March we welcomed Bolton Labour's Spokesperson on Licensing, Cllr. Akhtar Zaman who was a candidate in the old Deane-cum-Heaton ward, the predecessor of the fine and mighty Heaton & Lostock! Akhtar talked about and answered questions on the recently introcuced Licensing Act, which brought about widespread changes in a number of areas, particularly affecting the sale of alcohol. You can see the full details of the talk and discussion here or by following the Talks/Discussions link from Contents on the left.

Branch Annual General Meeting -
Cllr. Prentice Howarth Guest Speaker
Our new political year started with the familiar situation where the Chair asks for nomination of officers and everyone examines their feet as they sit on their hands! Nevertheless, the great and good of the Heaton & Lostock Labour Party leapt to the Branch's rescue. Graham was elected Chair; Sheila and Bob, Vice Chairs; John, Secretary and Noelene, Treasurer. John gave the Annual Report and, more interestingly, Cllr. Prentice Howarth, Bolton's Labour Spokesperson on Social Services spoke to the meeting and lead a discussion. You can see a summary of that here or by following the Talks/Discussions link from Contents on the left.

Branch Meeting - Dorothy Lever
on "The 2005 Labour Party Conference" and discussion "Labour's Third Term - A
Wind of Change?"
We rounded off our political year with an informal, behind the scenes, talk by Dorothy Lever, Bolton West's delegate to the 2005 Labour Party Conference. In a frank and amusing summary of her visit to Brighton in September she gave us a glimpse of what it's really like to take part in the annual razzamatazz! Her talk lead to a discussion about the future direction of the Party in Parliament following the election victory in May.
