Carlo Crivelli
Though he was born in Venice, painter Carlo Crivelli (active 1457-1493) worked mainly in the Marches region of east central Italy. It seems that after serving a sentence for adultery in Venice in 1457, he was never again seen in his native city. Instead, his work is closely identified with his adopted region, where he made his base first in Fermo and later in Camerino. His influence on the region's art is evident in the number of works painted in his style by the young artists who had him as a master. Crivelli's paintings are rich in decorative detail, with opulent garlands of fruit and flowers framing his Madonnas and saints. The ten-paneled polyptych in the chapel of the Holy Sacrament in Ascoli Piceno's cathedral is one of his masterpieces. It is interesting to note that although he never returned to his native Venice, he always signed his works "Carlo Crivelli of Venice".

We would be happy to arrange with the parish priest of a local village church for a private viewing of some Crivelli paintings.
