"There can be little doubt that St. Martin's at Canterbury is the oldest church in England, but after this come that fine group of seven churches of the seventh century still left standing, and among these Brixworth is the best architectural monument for a hundred miles around... It was built by the monks of Peterborough ... and comes from the second half of the seventh century, about 670 or 680."
