Welcome to the Work, Industry and Society Website This site is primarily intended for students who are using Management Lives (David Knights and Hugh Willmott, Sage, 1999) as a course text or as a supplementary text. It contains much material that complements this text or was written during its preparation or to provide additional learning materials. The site is continuously under development. The site is divided into divided into a number of sections. Clicking on the bolded text will take you direct to the page Course Information This is principally for students taking the course Work, Industry and Society at the Manchester School of Management, UMIST. It gives full details of the administrative arrangements for the course. Teaching Materials This provides copies of
the teaching materials organized by Semester and by Week. It contains most of what
has been presented in the lectures and in the seminars. It also contains some material
that has not been presented in lectures or seminars. Key Themes This provides a brief summary of
a number of key themes of the course. It comprises sections on the key concepts of
identity, insecurity, power and inequality and sections on the `part-whole problem' and
the `knowledge problem'. Topic Material This provide an archive of
papers that are relevant to the course and the preparation of essays Docudrama This describes the experiential
exercise undertaken during Semester 1 of the course. Material relevant to this exercise is
to be found here. Reading List Provides an extensive list of
