My continuing interest lies in developing a critical, questioning analyses of
diverse aspects of management. The interdisciplinary nature of my research
orientation has allowed me to engage in joint work with a number of
academics, nationally and internationally, who work in a variety of specialisms.
These
specialisms include organisation
studies, industrial sociology, accounting
and information systemIn recent years, my work has become increasingly empirically based as I have
worked on funded projects examining information and communication technologies
(ESRC), remote distribution of financial services (ESRC), corporate stategy and
management accounting (ICAEW), and changing organizatonal forms (ESRC). s. I have also co-edited a series of books on such topical
issues as gender, skill, quality management, business process reeingeering,
knowledge managment and customer service. Since 1990, I have sought to
disseminate my work to a wider audience by publishing in practitioner
journals and in the national press.
My research interests
fall into five major areas :
Organisation Studies. This work has examined the theoretical foundations of organisation analysis and explored, through empirical research, the relevance of social theory (e.g. Giddens' theory of structuration; Habermas' conception of knowledge constitutive interests) for organisation studies (e.g. B2, B12, B16, B66). More recently, I have focused upon the management of change within organisations (e.g. A9; A13). This interest has two aspects. First, an examination of the role of management specialists in the areas of human resource management, accounting, information systems and operational research (e.g. B23, B25, B36,B56, C32) . Second, the emergence and dissemination of new management ideas and techniques (e.g. B31, B41, B43, B53,B71, B74)).
Managerial Work. This has taken the form of a developing critique of established studies of managerial work. It is informed by an interest in post-Bravermanian labour process theory. Initially, this interest was pursued through an intensive field study of managerial work in a medium-sized insurance company funded by Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) (e.g. B16, B28, B29, C7). More recently, it has been pursued through more extensive case-study based research funded by CIMA and ICAEW (e.g. B65, B72). It has been complemented by a concern to apply social theory to better understand the theory and practice of diverse (e.g. accounting, human resource management, information systems) techniques. See, for example, below A3, A6, A9, B7, B12, B25, B29, B42, C11.
Management Education and Learning. This work addresses changes and debates in the content and delivery of courses taught within business schools, focussing particularly upon the relevance of contemporary critiques of management theory and practice for `action' and `situated' learning' (e.g. B40, B38, B68, B76). In addition to a series of journal articles and book chapters which introduce and develop these ideas, a book based on `action learning' approach to a 3rd year course has been prepared (e.g. A12, C33). This work has been complemented and extended by an examination of contemporary developments in higher education, focussing upon the `managerialization' of academic work (e.g. B43, B51, B63)
Accounting in Organizations and Society. The focus here has been upon the construction of accounting technologies which play such a key role in processes of company regulation and management control. A major study, funded by the ESRC, explored how the contents of these technologies are developed, refined and regulated within different nation-states. More recently, I shifted my focus to the regulation of auditors. See, for example, B6, B20, B39, B48, B73, B75, C25, C28, C31. See also the articles published in national newspapers in section D.
Social Theory. This work has been informed by a concern to found the
study of management upon a deeper appreciation of the problems and traditions of
social scientific inquiry. My interest has focused upon two areas. First, issues
of methodology and epistemology (e.g. B17, B33, B62, B66). Second, recent
efforts of social theorists to overcome dualistic formulations of the dynamics
of social reproduction. A particular interest in this area is the theory of the
subject, and the challenge of integrating such a theory with an appreciation of
the political and economic conditions of social existence. See, for
example, below B11, B14, B33, B79, C13, C27, C40, C41.
