The Fair Maid

Chorus - straight hey for three on the sides

Tops face down, middles and bottoms face up, start the hey with tops and middles passing right shoulders (eight bars) dance all the way through to places. Then repeat, bottoms facing up and the rest down, starting with bottoms and middles passing right shoulders again (eight bars).

Figures

Note that each figure repeats: the middles lead each repeat, the first time turning to their left to dance with that couple (eight bars), the second time to their right (eight bars).

Pinwheel Stars:

The top and bottom couple, plus 'their' middle in each case, make a small circle facing clockwise, tilting the staves so the points are together, to form a small pyramid, and dance round, once slowly or twice fast, to places, the middles opening out into their places (eight bars). Then the middles swap over and the pinwheel stars go round anticlockwise (eight bars).

Heys Top and Bottom:

Each middle passes between the two people in 'their' couple, then turns right to start a straight hey for three, ending back in place (eight bars). Then the middles face the other couple and again pass between, again turning right to start the hey (eight bars).

Cross and Rounds:

Middles face left and dance past 'their' couple. The person in that couple who was diagonally to he middle's left, as opposed to next to them on their left, turns round and the couple follow the middle round in a small round counter-clockwise on the end. To finish, the middle dances directly back to place whilst the end couple change sides (eight bars). Then the middles face the couple on their right, and repeat, the rounds in this case going clockwise.

Circular Hey:

Tops face down, middles face up and bottoms face across. Start a grand chain around the set by passing right shoulders with the person you're facing, continue passing alternately right and left, crossing over at the ends, once round slowly or twice round fast, to places (sixteen bars)
