Basketmaking
St 273 Priory Cottage SP 082662 Mappleborough Green; no trace of brick workshop at N. W. of cottage where Mr. Melin made baskets till death c. 1922; osier beds were on Henley Road nr. Outhill, either side of Lower Skilts Drive; one to west filled in; other by Rose Cottage remains.
Ropemaking
A 21 High Street, Alcester SP 088574 Averill’s Ropeworks stood behind the High Street in what until recently was Alcester Builders’ yard. OS map of 1905 marks ropewalk and names it as such. Ropewalks were long sheds, open on one side, in which ropes and twine were twisted; no visible remains. Averill family involved with rope and twine making since 1813 at least (County Record 0ffice (Warks?) deed) ; ropeworks seem to have closed in 1920’s (D.)
