| A 21 | High Street, Alcester | SP 088574 | Averills Ropeworks stood behind the High Street in what until recently was Alcester Builders yard. OS map of 1905 marks ropewalk and names it as such. Ropewalks were long sheds, open on one side, in which ropes and twine were twisted; no visible remains. Averill family involved with rope and twine making since 1813 at least (County Record 0ffice (Warks?) deed) ; ropeworks seem to have closed in 1920s (D.) |
