Parbold Community Association Chairman’s report: As I write this the final phase of improvements to the Village Hall will have been completed and I am very proud to have been part of the committee who have made this happen. I would like to encourage you all to come and see for yourself that the hall is now a venue suitable for any occasion. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our users for their patience during the improvements. The cinema screen has also been installed and we are hoping to have the Parbold Picture House up and running soon. As always, we are looking for volunteers to help with the setting up of this project and anyone who feels they could help in any small way would be most welcome. Tel: 463703. Sue Halton

DOUGLAS DRAMA GROUP FIND PERFECT PITCH – PLAY ON - For only the second time in the Drama Group’s 45 year history, we took a stall at the Village Show in July. Two years ago, at the stall, we recruited only one new member (but a good ‘un). This year we managed another five! For a group our size, that increases our strength by about 40%. And we reckon that with that sort of growth, in a few years all the village will be members! We had a great day, lots of people browsed our stall, looking at the archive of photos, past programmes and newspaper cuttings, as well as chatting to members of the group. The day was made even better by the fact that our pitch, at the Jubilee Garden, was right opposite Jim’s house and so we had a constant supply of bacon butties and mugs of tea. Following that success, we held two rehearsal workshops during the summer to allow our new members to see how the group works – again these were a great success. Lots of people who came to our stall asked if there was a drama group for youngsters in the village. Looks like there’s a gap for a junior drama group – any takers? So, what’s new then? Well, rehearsals for this NOVEMBER’S PRODUCTION have started. We are performing “CAUGHT ON THE HOP” a COMEDY by the late Derek Benfield. The performance dates are 25, 27 & 28 NOVEMBER and more details will appear in next month’s (and subsequent) Newsletters. So, if you are interested in getting involved or just want to find out more about us, just collar any member of the Group or Sandra 462430 or Alan 464426 DOUGLAS DRAMA GROUP – LOCAL DRAMA FOR LOCAL PEOPLE

Rail Travel Update for September - as at the 13th August The only scheduled line closures likely to affect Parbold travellers are weekend journeys across the Pennines. On the 12th, 13th, 20th, 26th and 27th September expect to travel via Manchester Victoria rather than Piccadilly (which will mean a change at Salford Crescent from here on Airport trains). AT LAST the national booking system will offer the correct fares from Parbold to Railcard holders on peak Virgin trains, allowing off-peak return fares. Until recently the tickets were valid but an error on the system meant you had to say you wanted to use an off-peak train to buy one. Connections TO Preston via Wigan are now very poor: if you don't mind the walk across Burscough use for example the 8.59 from Parbold and cross to Burscough Junction for the 9.21 from there.
