PCA Chairperson’s Report I'm sorry that I missed the Variety Night at Parbold Village Hall as I was on holiday, but I believe everyone had a wonderful time. Councillor Mrs Wess would like to say “Oh what a night! Thank you so much to all our absolutely fantastic performers and to everybody who came to support them and for all the great comments and thanks received for such a wonderful night. Well done everybody involved”. I too would like to thank everyone that took part and special thanks to Alan McCabe, MC on the night, for keeping it all together. And now Show Time: firstly we have the Pemberton Old Wigan Brass band on the 18th October, do come along, there are no strings attached, and to follow, Warrington Musical Society and the Halton Orpheus Choir on the 8th November. Lastly, for all you car drivers out there, if you come to a fork in the road, please stop and pick it up, it might cause a puncture. See you all next month. Take care. Roger Perry

PARISH COUNCIL NOTES - Clerk: Mrs Elizabeth-Anne Broad, 1 Pinewood, Skelmersdale, Lancashire, WN8 6UZ. Tel: 01695 557678 Mob: 07973 340254 e-mail: parboldpc.clerk@yahoo.com The Parish Council meets on the first Friday of the month at 7.30 pm in the Village Hall. Overhanging hedges and trees are causing real problems for pedestrians and interrupting sight lines for cars exiting side roads. Please take a look at your hedges and cut them back now that autumn is here. Anyone with a culvert on their land is also requested to take a look that the culvert is clear of leaves and debris so that the water courses are able to cope with wet weather. The Parish Council would also like to remind people that the new playing field at Alder Lane is newly seeded and should not be played upon until March 2009. It would be very much appreciated if you could keep off the grass until then. Contact details of Parish Councillors are on the Parish Council Notice Board on the Common.

Rail Travel Update for October 2008 - The Trent Valley line is closed at weekends through the Autumn adding about three quarters of an hour to journey times to London. The Warrington-Crewe line is also closed at weekends, supposedly after the 10.01 Saturday departure from Wigan but all day at least until the 11th October. There will be a handful of through trains from Wigan diverting via Chester, but travelling from Parbold it will be best to go via Manchester, adding an hour to journey times South in addition to the above. There will also be very few Virgin trains Northbound. Rugby is again closed on the weekend of 4th/5th October and possibly the 11th/12th too: with no trains beyond Coventry avoid trying to travel by train to or from London then! More information on UK and European rail travel opportunities from Parbold is available for Web users in the recently updated rail travel section in 'odds and ends' in www.parbold.org . Any suggestions for additional material to David Gelder, Tel. 01257 462716
