Public Meeting at Parbold Village Hall – 9th June 2009 at 7.30pm

You may be aware that the government is promoting healthy living and lifestyle and has set aside funding for the rural areas.  With this in mind, the Parish Council are hoping to develop recreational facilities on the Alder Lane Sports Field (Multi Use Games Area, Dirt Park and a path for walking/running) and taking it one step further by setting up PALS, (Parbold Active Life Style).  We have been helped in this by Dr Tony Charlton from Edge Hill University, who is working as a member of a new group, SPAA [Sport and Physical Activity Alliance] with West Lancashire District Council on possible funding initiatives and an overall district strategy.

What has this got to do with you?

As a resident you may already be a member of a group that uses the Village Hall and or Women’s Institute!  You are important to the foundation upon which we would like to build: all residents have a part to play and all will be welcomed: please come to see what is available in our village.

What have you got to do? As a resident if you wish agree to become a member of PALS and just carry on doing what you already do so well, with no interference from anyone else!  Or get more involved and join one of the many activities that are available here in Parbold.

What will it cost you?  £1 per person for a yearly membership has been mentioned!

How active do you have to be?

That is entirely up to you. The idea is to get people out of their homes for whatever reason, a cookery/gardening session, a gentle stroll around the village or field, whist drive, dancing, there are more active sports for those that want them, and to encourage all ages to participate in what is already here for them and if anyone knows of something that is not happening but would like it to happen, we will see if it can be set up.

What have you got to lose?  What have you got to gain?

Come and join us in the large hall in the Village Hall at 7.30pm on Tuesday 9th June and see for yourself.  Dr Charlton and members of the Parish Council will be there to answer your questions.

Parbold Festival – Saturday July 18th at 1 pm  '

Parbold Festival is getting closer!  If you haven’t already decided which classes to enter check out the Festival Brochure NOW.  It’s free from the DIY centre or from the Library.  There are many choices: flowers, handicrafts, art, photography etc.  If you wish to bake The Croston Bun please note that the recipe should read one teaspoon of mixed spice.  We are collecting for the tombola and if you have something to donate please contact Sue on 463703.  We already have some nominees for the Joan Draper Cup (for the person who has done most for the community on a voluntary basis) but nominations will be accepted until the end of June.

Calling all children!  The Festival will be opened with a Fancy Dress Competition on the Festival’s theme of “A Journey into space”…  please start thinking of your outfit now. Details to follow next month. If you can play an instrument or would like to sing or read a poem at the Songs of Praise service which is on Sunday 19th July at 3 pm - contact Anne on 462176

PARBOLD BABY AND TODDLER GROUP is held in the Village Hall every Thursday afternoon from
1.15 - 2.45 pm, usually only in term time.  However we will be opening for the last three weeks of the summer holiday -13th August, 20th August and the 27th August.  Bring along any children aged from birth up to school age. There is a nice friendly atmosphere and it is a good place for mums, dads, grandparents and carers to meet other mums etc.  We have lots of toys/books/crafts for the children to play with and the health visitors hold a session immediately afterwards, so you can stay and have your baby/toddler weighed or to ask any questions. £1-00 charge per family/group just to contribute to the cost of tea and biscuits.   For more details contact Michelle Thomas 01257 464938.

PARBOLD TREE WARDEN GROUP

Over the last ten years our small group has tended the gardens at the Village Hall, Jubilee Garden, Bramble Way shrub beds and many other ‘bits and pieces’.  We have also maintained hedges, monitored woodland areas and planted the bulbs that flower around the village.

Due to advancing years, aches and pains etc. the Group would like to hear from anyone who could offer to help – mainly in the busy summer period – with some of the work, or who may like to look after a small area of public garden.

All offers to the Secretary please!  Margaret Abel 01257 462909.  email:  abelchris@talktalk.net

Rail Travel Update There were minor service revisions in mid-May but the main news is that we can look forward to a summer with no regular weekend disruption to main line services, although there will again be closures in the Autumn. In June there will be no services through Stockport on Sundays, or through Halifax on Sundays from the 14th. Check on alternatives if you planned to use those routes.
