MODERN PRACTICAL CARPENTRY for the Use of Workmen, Builders, Architects, and Engineers. 3rd. revised edition 1927. 10 3/8” x 7 1/8”, 412 pages, 33 (I – XXXII, and IXa) double-page and photographic plates, many additional black and white plates, about 1100 illustrations in all. A comprehensive treatise on the whole art of Constructive Carpentry (save that of Naval Architecture), in which every branch of the subject is dealt with in a thorough and practical manner, by an author who has had the advantage of working at all branches of the trade. This edition has an additional chapter ‘giving examples and details relating to the construction of large roofs having unusual features… together with some interesting additional calculations relating to the strength of timber beams’. The classic reference book, out of print for decades. Extensive Glossary. Hb in original cloth, previous owner’s name and date (1928) on front free end-paper, internally very good, though with occasional foxing, externally original binding is a little dull, also a little rubbed at upper and lower corners and spine, otherwise a very good copy of an uncommon title. 95.00 pounds sterling

Handrailing and Wreath Making; Comprising Modern Methods of Producing Solid and Built-up Handrails, Ramps, Knees, Breaks and Easings of Single and Double Curvature; also Methods of Setting out Face and Falling Moulds; Large Scale Working Drawings of Typical Wreaths, including the Formation of Ramps, Kneelings and Solid Easings, and a Full Description of Setting out Scrolls, Spirals, Mitre Caps, and other Terminals. 1932. 10 1/2" x 7 1/2", 108 pages, 32 plates, many folding, 26 text illustrations. Fully illustrated by Working Diagrams and diagrams including photographic reproductions of old and modern types. Glossary. This is the second volume of George Ellis's classic final work - Ellis died when the book was in an advanced state of preparation. NB - Plate 6 has an area of plain paper torn from the margin, approximately 4 1/4" long x 1 1/4" wide at max. The illustration is not affected. Describes stairbuilding from the fundamentals; illustrates many useful devices, and shows the construction in great detail. Hb, little rubbed at edges and corners, one folding plate slightly crumpled at edge. Otherwise a very good copy. US$ 135.00 / 90.00 pounds sterling.

Covers the years 1884 - 1891; a very frank history of a small, two-centuries old business, chronicling the working lives of individual craftsmen. A classic book. Hb in dw, very good. B518) Jeays, Joshua (Author of 'The Geometrical Construction of a Hip-Roof) THE ORTHOGONAL SYSTEM OF HAND-RAILING, with Practical Illustrations of the Construction of Stairs (click for picture). London 1850. 9" x 5 3/4", 80 pages plus 10 folded pages of plans, many text illustrations. A revision of Nicholson's theory (which the author found led to 'the most erroneous results'). The principles of this system were presented to the Society of Arts by the author, and led to the award of the large silver Medal. plates and many hundreds of engravings on wood. Plates on skew bridges with
laminated arch-pieces, roofs with timber steeples and elliptical stairs,
