Survey of the life and work of the talented architect/designer E W Godwin (1833-1886) whose work was to so greatly influence later generations. Excellent study of this important country house built by Phillip Webb for the Wyndham family in 1886 at East Knoyle on the Wiltshire/Dorset border. Detailed account of the construction and of the pictures and furnishings of the house. Also the social life within the house and the artistic fraternity including Morris and Burne-Jones who were visitors to the house. The later history until it was sold in 1936 and the later vicissitudes of the house are also covered.

 

Bristow I C ARCHITECTURAL COLOUR IN BRITISH INTERIORS 1650-1840, Yale 1996, xxi + 265pp, 21pls & figs inc col, cloth, dw, card slip case, lg 4to                                                                             was £80.00 now £32.50          This masterly work assembles the evidence for the various colours and colour schemes that were used for the decoration of English Houses during the Stuart and Georgian periods. Apart from the documentary evidence, the author has assembled an extensive series of coloured architects drawings and watercolours of interiors which show colour schemes. This is a companion volume to the author’s work on paint composition and technology, but stands alone as study of colour in historic interior decoration.

Alberti (1404-72) is best known for his architectural writings. This book is a detailed analysis of his buildings in Rimini, Florence and Mantua and how he applied his architectural theory to his building.
