Cycling

This is a local section of the CTC (national cycling club).  Our rides mostly start from St Albans & Hatfield but also some from East lane car park.  We have 7 active members that I know of living in Wheathampstead. I am based in Marford Rd and have created a web site that is updated regularly. We also carry a page relating to activities for tandemists.

Mead Quilters

Meetings are held at the Mead Hall, East Lane, Wheathampstead

on the 3rd Tuesday (evening 7:30)

and 1st Thursday (morning 10:00 to 12:00)

65 members and a waiting list at present.

Horticultural Society

Meetings are generally held at 8.00pm in the Memorial Hall. There are two sections:

Horticultural Section meets 1st Wed. each month
Wine Club often meets last Wed. each month

The Horticultural Section meets on the first Wednesday of every month at 8.00 p.m. in the Memorial Hall, Marford Road to hear interesting, illustrated talks on all aspects of gardening. 

Visitors and new member are always welcome and you don't have to be an experienced gardener to join.  We regularly have excellent speakers with stunning photography so why not come along to a meeting and give us a try. 

We also run plant sales and popular coach trips to attractive gardens.

The Wine Club, a section of the Horticultural Society, meets on the last Wednesday of the month at 8.00 p.m. in the Memorial Hall.  The committee have put together an interesting programme for 2007 and into 2008, ranging from professionally led tasting to home brewing, via ‘cooking with wine’ and ‘The Old Bailey’ on the way. The Wheathampstead Club

The Wheathampstead Club has been in existence for about 70 years and is open to Members and their friends from any locality. The present Club building itself has now been built for 16 years and all the facilities are relatively up-to-date. They offer Games Sections for Snooker, Darts, Pool, Crib etc.

The following events are regularly held:

 

A Big Band Concert on the second Monday of every month except August. The Orchestra consists of 20 musicians and they are conducted, also a Vocalist is provided. The admission is only £2 and they encourage 7:30 p.m. arrivals

 

Country Music with some of the best Country Musicians in the South - every first Saturday of every month

Both of these functions, together with internal functions are open to Members and non-members. The Concert Room can be hired for private functions and holds 120 visitors.

An elected Committee runs the Club and we invite all to Enrol and enjoy this Community centre.

MIND 

This is the Branch Out Befriending Scheme (St Albans & District). Adults give 1 - 2 hours per week to befriend the lonely or isolated who suffer long term mental health problems. Ongoing training and support is provided; expenses are reimbursed. We work toward equal opportunities for all.

Send A Cow  

This is a registered charity that sponsors the provision cows to families in Uganda and the training of support vets. A letter from Paul Heiney says "..... Remember, Uganda's own national herd was largely slaughtered and downgraded in the country's long civil war; what we are doing is not imposing western ways, but replacing those lost skills as well as lost cattle. .."

Friends of St. Helen's Church

Founded in 1970-1 the Friends were registered as a charity in 1995-6. The constitution expresses the aim as, "The preservation, repair and restoration of St Helen's church building for the benefit of the public by the provision of funds and equipment in co-operating with the Parochial Church Council"

Over the years the Friends have raised over £80,000 and contributed to:

This is a mixed group. Meetings are held on Thursdays at 7:15pm till 9:00pm in the Scout Hut. The ages covered are 14 to 18 years. There is participation in adventurous activities. New members are welcome.

W.A.S.P.s. (Wheathampstead After School Play Scheme and Holiday Club)

The After School Club is open to pupils of Beech Hyde and St Helen's Schools.  It is open from 3.15 until 6.15pm during term time.  The Holiday Club is open to primary school aged children from Wheathampstead and the surrounding area. It is open during the half term holidays and at Easter and during some of the Summer Holidays (dates on application).
